Parsimony — The Systems Journal
Learn the systems before you buy the software.
This is where operators learn ERP for small business, standard operating procedures, and AI agents — the explainers we wish someone had handed us before we bought our first system.
In this explainer
Why Systems First
Why we start with the system, not the software.
Most software buying starts backward. A team feels pain — slow support, a messy spreadsheet, a month-end close that takes three weeks — and goes looking for a tool to make the pain stop. The tool gets bought. The pain moves somewhere else, because the tool was never the problem. The system underneath it was.
A system is just the sequence of steps a business actually follows to get something done: how an order becomes a shipment, how a lead becomes a customer, how a receipt becomes a line on a P&L. Every business runs on systems whether or not anyone ever wrote them down. Software does not replace a system. It encodes one — badly, if nobody understood the system first.
That is why we build ERP, automation, and AI agents for a living and still start every project with questions, not a demo. What does the process look like today? Who does each step, and why that person? Where does it break under load? An ERP that automates a broken process just breaks faster. An AI agent trained on an undocumented policy repeats the same confusion at machine speed, all day, to every customer.
Learning your own systems is not a detour before the real work of buying software. It is the real work. An operator who can describe their own order-to-cash process in five sentences will pick better software, negotiate a shorter implementation, and get more out of an AI agent than one who cannot.
This page is where we put that thinking in writing: short explainers on ERP and how to evaluate it, standard operating procedures, the law of parsimony we build by, and the archive of what we have published on the subject since we started. Start wherever your own question is. Read before you buy — from us, or from anyone else.
